Reverse Osmosis and UV sterilizers

Reverse osmosis separation technology is used to remove dissolved impurities from water through the use of a semi-permeable membrane. RO technology involves the reversal of flow through a membrane from a high salinity, or concentrated solution to the high purity, or "permeate", stream on the opposite side of the membrane. Pressure is used as the driving force for the separation. The applied pressure (P) must be in excess of the osmotic pressure of the dissolved contaminants to allow flow across the membrane.

In a conventional sand filter, lighter and finer sand particles are found at the top of the filter bed, and coarser, heavier sand particles remain at the bottom after back washing. Filtration takes place in the top few inches of the filter bed.

A multimedia filter is back washed in the same manner as a sand filter, using reverse or upward flow of water through the filter bed. The various layers of media retain their stratification because each material has a different density.

Ozone has been used for disinfection of drinking water in the Municipal Water Industry in Europe for over 100 years and is used by large number of Water Companies. Because ozone is made of oxygen and reverts to pure oxygen it vanishes without trace once it has been used. Ozone is produced by an Ozone Generator.

UV sterilizers utilize germicidal ultraviolet lamps that produce short wave radiation lethal to bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms present in water. Ultraviolet water treatment purification is a unique and rapid method of water disinfection without the use of heat or chemicals. Through the years ultraviolet technology has become well established as a method of choice for effective and economical water disinfection.
